Equal 6th on 6 points were five players: Dylan, Kingsley, Mark (Hagendoorn), Ned and Saminda.
It has been terrific to have so many of you competing with a great attitude, to make this an interesting and enjoyable 9-round swiss. Report from Rob Maris:
The Mary Thomson Cup was well supported by club players with 48 competing. Tournament organiser Dylan Gough allocated players into really well matched groups and Daniel Clarke arranged for the games to go onto the club website.
Derek Elkington made a successful return to the club after a break since 2021. Even though he was the lowest rated player in the A group, he played strongly to score 4/7; this included a last-round difficult draw against an in-form Jacob Gibson! This draw meant that Jacob finished 2nd on 5 points, just half a point behind 1st placed Rob Maris.
The B group was convincingly won by Ashvin Balavignan on 6/7. Ashvin has also had very impressive results recently at the Perth International Open and the Metro Club Championship, so is well on his way to a rating around 2000! The other junior in the B group was the lowest rated Eric Deng; he finished 2nd on 5 points, with Derek Roebuck only half a point behind.
The C group was the closest scoring group – only 1 and a half points separated 6 players! The other two players were Franz Oswald and Gerard Akers, who both played strongly to share 1st place with 5 and a half points – well ahead of their younger opponents!
In the D group Charles Knight scored 6/7 to triumphantly take 1st place, with Martin Leech and Tristan Weijermars equal 2nd on 4 and a half points. Mark Hagendoorn did well on his return to the club after a long break, scoring 4 points and equal 4th with improving Raf Adel.
The E group was a 16-player 7-round swiss. The top-rated player Max Otis has improved a lot recently, so he won the group with a dominant 7/7! Bruce Lanham was the best of the rest, achieving 2nd place on 5 points. Grant Porteus played much better in the later part of the tournament to finish 3rd on 4.5 points; this included a last round victory over an improving Ahmad Dawoud.
The Perth Chess League was won by the Perth Chess Club B team that Gyula organised. See the CAWA website for details.
Report from Dylan Gough:
The recently played 2024 Perth Club Championships (10th April – May 22) saw some high-quality chess played across two divisions, an Open Division in a round-robin format for the top 8 players and a Swiss 7-round format for all others.
A great tournament from Victor Spirin saw him emerge as the clear winner in the open group with a flawless score of 7 out of 7. His win ensures that he is crowned the Perth Club Champion for 2024 – Well done Victor. In second place with a score of 4.5 was Daniel Clarke who played well and got some great results to finish in clear second place – Well done Daniel. Rounding out the podium was Jacob Gibson with a score of 3.5. This was a tough field and the quality of chess was high. Well done to all players who turned up week after week to ensure the competition ran smoothly and successfully.
In the Reserves section the tournament outcome literally came down to the last game, where the result from youngsters Daryoush Darani and Eric Deng would decide the title. In the end it was Daryoush who emerged victorious and who then became the 2024 Perth Club Reserves Club Champion with a score of 6 out of 7. Eric was second with a fantastic score of 5.5 and rating mover Max Otis came up with the same score 5.5 to share second with Eric. Well done guys for all the great games.
A big thank you to Rob Maris, Marc Saxon, Daniel Clarke and Charles Knight for their support week in, week out and for consistently ensuring the accuracy of the score sheets and their availability to all on the website over the span of the tournament. And thanks to all the players who played competitive and fair throughout the tournament, turning up every week in good spirits and playing as true sportsmen and women. It has been such a joy organising this tournament with such a great bunch of people.
Report from Rob Maris:

Top junior Ashvin was equal second with Jacob Gibson and Derek Elkington. Jacob achieved equal second by defeating club President Marc Saxon in the last round. Derek finished equal second by winning against impressive Wolfgang in the last round.
It was great to see so many players competing, including some strong new players to the club: Noor Rahmani, Gabriele Fokaite, Nimesh Shamalka. In a pleasant warm atmosphere there were plenty of enjoyable and interesting games played by all.

Report from Dylan Gough:
Wednesday the 22nd March saw the conclusion of the 2023 Mary Thomson Cup. This year there was a record number of players (54) over six playing groups, all of which were closely contested right down until the last games were played. Below is a list of the final results.
Congratulations to the final six winners:
Group A: Jay Lakner
Group B: Ross List and David Barry
Group C: Dylan Gough
Group D: Ashley Michael
Group E: Kobe Wu and Jean Michel Maujean
Group F: John Brooke
Congratulations to these players having topped their division despite some tough opposition.
Also a thank you and acknowledgement goes out to those members who diligently put together and collated the PGN's every week. These are (as usual) available on the Perth website.
The club continues to grow and it was ever so promising to see a record number of entrants into our first tournament of the year. Thank you again to all involved, your ethical play, your willingness to accommodate and your brilliant chess. It is truly the great sign of a healthy club. I look forward to the next one and working with you all again soon.
Report from Dylan Gough:
The 2023 Perth Club Championships have completed for another year and this year saw the greatest turnout ever. The tournament saw a record 54 entrants participate in 7 rounds of high quality chess.
The winner of the tournament literally came down to the last game of the final night on board 1, where newcomer and welcome member Victor Spirin defeated an in-form Iker Hernandez Mendez to secure first place with a fantastic score of 6 out of 7. A win from Jamie Laubbacher in the last round helped him to leapfrog Iker for second place and Iker secured third place with some impressive chess over all the weeks. Well done to these three guys.
This year for the first time we will be introducing a reserves prize for the best performance of any player 1600 in rating and below. This year that prize goes to Lennon Kerr, one of our youngest players and one of a collection of many fast-improving juniors in today's game. Well played Lennon, keep up the good work. (Calan Curtis was a joint Reserves winner, overlooked in the original report.)
A tournament like this is never possible without all the work behind the scenes in addition to coming along and playing. Special mention must go to Rob Maris and the crew who help with setup and pack away every week, often being the first to arrive and the last to leave. Also for the diligent team of Daniel Clarke, Dave Barry and others who consistently ensure that the games are PGN'd and placed onto the website for all to enjoy.
Thank you and congratulations to everybody for making this tournament a success. See you again next year.
Report from Dylan Gough:
As we enter into the second half of 2023, our club continues to grow both in numbers and in standard. Our tournaments continue to attract a greater number of players and our external events such as the Harris/Edwardes Trophy and Bernard Anton Shield currently place us as the premium adult club in Perth.
This is largely due to the immense amount of hard work that we as a club put into these specialised events. From the players, to the committee, to you the players and all those behind the scenes, the continued success of Perth Chess Club is a welcome testament to you all. Thank you.

Report from Dylan Gough:
Perth Chess Club has recently completed its annual Wolfgang Leonhardt and John Brooke Cups for 2023.
Firstly, the Wolfgang Leonhardt cup saw 24 people play 7 rounds of chess with a rating level of 1600 or higher. At the end of the seven rounds the results showed an equal place finish at the top of the leader board by the two highest ranked players in the competition.
Derwent Maggs and Jay Lakner both scored 6 points out of 7 with some brilliant chess playing and were only separated at the end of the tournament by 0.5 tiebreak points, indicating the quality and level both gentlemen played.
In third place CM Gyula Plaganyi finished with a commendable 5 out of 7. Newcomer Michael Selby finished strongly with some great results to finish outright 4th with 4.5 out of 7.
Thank you to all for your commitment and flexibility to make this tournament a success.
In the John Brooke Cup a last game save from Calan Curtis against veteran player Mark Howard, who played such a great game, resulted in a draw after many movers and handed the outright win to Calan with 6 points out of 7.
Very well played by Calan, who played well above his rating to win the division. Second place was shared between Mark Howard, Martin Leech and young Jaswanth Ram Sethuraman who also played above his rating to finish on 5 out of 7.
The John Brooke cup consisted of 29 players and was played over 7 rounds.
Much thanks go to Rob Maris, Daniel Clarke and Marc Saxon for their assistance and support throughout the tournament.
Our next classical tournament will take place on Wednesday 11th of October when players will be competing against other players of similar rating levels in the final classical tournament of the year, the Norbert Muller Cup. I hope to see you there.
At a recent club night, Carter Kerr presented a win of his at the Harris-Edwardes interclub tournament; the game is now available to view.
Report from Dylan Gough:
The last Perth Chess Club tournament of the year has recently concluded. The Norbert Muller Cup was played over 4 divisions (A-D) with A-C being 8-person round-robins and D being an all-in 7-round Swiss.
A total of 43 players entered and some great and exciting chess was played in all divisions. In a couple of cases the final results for placings were not decided until the final games.
Well done to all winners below.
Group A
Finishing 1st was Gyula Plaganyi, who played excellent chess and was consistently producing great results to win with a score of 5 out of 7. Equal 2nd was shared between Marc Saxon and Rob Maris, the latter finishing strongly after a slow start.
Group B
The runaway winner of this division was also the youngest member, Ashvin Balavignan, who nearly clean swept the competition with 5 wins and two draws. One draw was with the highest seed Dylan Gough, and the other was with the eldest member of the group and second place getter, 94-year-old Wolfgang Leonhardt, who finished on a remarkable 5.5. Third place went to a tremendous result from Ashley Michael who finished with 4.
Group C
1st place went to Gerard Akers, whose consistency and resurgent chess has produced great results and a win in this tournament. He was followed closely by Calan Curtis, who finished on a respectable 5 out of 7. Justim Massam finished in 3rd place with 4.5.
Group D
This was a 7-round swiss tournament which produced some interesting upsets and results. It was eventually won by relative club newcomer Raf Adel, closely followed by a resurgent Charles Knight, half a point back on 5.5, and a junior who had the tournament of his chess life to date in Sebastian Gough, who finished on 5/7.
Games are available for viewing and download (PGN) on the Tournament page.
A big thank you to all involved in the club this year and me and my family wish you all a great and safe Christmas and a prosperous and successful New Year. I look forward to seeing you all in 2024 for more great chess.
Photos from the trophy presentation for 2023 are now on the Photos page. As well as the tournament trophies, there is also Rob Maris winning the inaugural Club Spirit Award. From his nomination: "Rob is usually the first to arrive and last to leave each week. He opens up and takes on the biggest role in setting up the tables, chairs and boards; as well as also packing them all away at the end of the night."
Report from Rob Maris:
The MT Cup consisted of 34 players that were allocated into 4 rating groups.
A feature of this tournament was the games being available to view on the tournament page, with thanks to Daniel Clarke and David Barry.
The "A" was a 10 player swiss that was won by Derwent Maggs on 6.5/7, his only draw being to Gyula Plaganyi. Gyula finished third just behind Rob Maris on 5.
In the "B" Chirag Doshi triumphed with 5.5/6, his only draw to Dylan Gough. Dylan shared 2nd place with Tristan Weijermars on 3.5/6.
The top two players in the "C" are clearly improving players: 1st was Ashley Michael on 6/7 with Charles Knight 2nd on 5/7.
Before the last round of the "D", only 1.5 points (4/6 to 2.5/6) separated all 8 players! In the final round Norbert Muller triumphed to finish 1st on 5/7 with Manfred Young 2nd on 4.5.
Report from Rob Maris:
The Fixed Openings tournament had a different opening for each of the 5 rounds, thanks to organiser Alan Wolsencroft. Marc Saxon had an impressive victory over Derwent Maggs in the last round to finish first.
Report from Rob Maris:
The Lightning Championship had 29 players competing in a 7 round swiss with 5 mins plus 2 secs per move. Derwent Maggs finished first on 6/7 ahead of Rob Maris and Alex Janceski.
Report from Rob Maris:
An excellent turn out of 41 players took part in the Perth Club Championship, a 7-round swiss that is also FIDE rated.
This is the only normal rated tournament where players are in one swiss, so it gives members the chance to play those they don't usually meet (leading to plenty of upsets).
Derwent Maggs is the club champion after defeating Marc Saxon in the final round to score 6.5/7.
Jacob Gibson was an impressive second after winning against Alex Janceski in a instructive endgame.
Equal third were Marc Saxon, David Barry and Yonal De Vas, with Alex Janceski 6th.
As can be seen from the cross-table, a few of the other players that performed far above their rating: Ernest Boswarva scored 4 points, including a win over Ross List, plus draws with Dylan Gough and the out of form Rob Maris. Kuol Garang started with 3/3 which included early wins over Robert Stortz and Ross List, so faced a tough field. Sebastian Gough, although rated 40th, was able to win 3 games.
With thanks to Daniel Clarke and David Barry, the games are available to play on the tournament page.
This tournament is included in the June ratings; only one new player (Ahmad) does not yet have a FIDE rating.
Report from Rob Maris:
The Allegro Championship was an 8-round swiss held over 2 weeks at the time control of 15 mins plus 3 secs per move.
Derwent was sole leader on 4/4 after the first week. However, in round 5 Marc Saxon defeated him to take the lead. Then in round 6 Marc was held to a draw by Alex Janceski, so Derwent was able to catch him up. Then in the final round Marc was beaten by Saminda De Vas who finished 2nd with him, whilst Derwent came 1st. Alex Janceski shared equal 4th with Josh Davoll and Vasil Nikolov. This tournament attracted 32 players, who competed in a good atmosphere and the tournament will be ACF Quick rated.
Report from Rob Maris:
The Fred Maris Cup had 40 players competing in six rating groups with a time control of 50 mins plus 30 secs per move.
The "A" group was a 6-round swiss consisting of 16 players. In round 5 Marc Saxon defeated Iker Hernandez Mendez in an exciting game to go a point clear. However, in the last round Jacob Gibson defeated Marc whilst Iker defeated Daniel Clarke. This resulted in Marc and Iker sharing first place on 4.5/6, with Jacob third and Daniel equal fourth with an unbeaten Derek Roebuck. Stephen Phillip made an outstanding return to competitive chess, joining the "A" group in round 4 to score 2.5/3.
The final game of the "B" group between Yonal and Steven decided the winner. Yonal triumphed to win with 4/5; his only loss was to Charles Knight, who is also improving and finished second on 3.5/5.
Miles Sowden was leading the "C" group with 3/4 going into the last round. However, he was beaten by Justin Massam, so Martin Leech was able to overtake Miles to win the group with 3.5/5.
Going into the last round of the "D" group, Jake Watson and Darren Powell were both on 4/4. Darren was victorious to win the group, plus as the only player to win all of his games, Darren is the winner of the Fred Maris Perpetual Trophy. In his first rated tournament at the club, 11-year-old Dominic Davoll played impressively and scored 3/5 to finish third.
Ridge Kwenda went into the last round of the "E" group a point clear on 4/4. However, young Senudi defeated Ridge to share first place with him on 4/5.
The games are on the tournament page; Daniel has kindly been entering these each week.
On Thursday 7th July 2022, two chess teams from across the city competed in an exciting night chess, as Perth Chess Club travelled to the home of Metro Chess Club for the first leg of the annual Bernard Anton Shield.
The event pitted four teams of three players against each other in a round robin format, at a time control of 20m+3s, with rating divisions this year being chosen by Metro Chess Club.
In the Open division, a strong Metro team defeated Perth 6-3. Perth held a narrow lead of 5-4 in the U2000 division, thanks a clean sweep to come from behind in the final round. The U1750 division also had a strong 3-0 final round to come out on top with a 6.5-2.5 advantage. Rounding out the competition, Perth finished with a dominating 6-3 lead in the U1550 division.
Overall, with a score of 20.5-15.5, Perth takes a 5 point advantage into the return leg, which will be hosted at Perth Chess Club in October. Let’s see if we can maintain our lead when the competition resumes.
Thanks and well done to all players who participated, and special thanks to Alan Wolstencroft for his work in organising Perth’s team. A photo of the winning Perth team at the Metro home leg is available on the Photos page.
Report from Dylan Gough:
The Wolfgang Leonhardt Cup and John Brooke Cup events are now concluded and there has been some quality chess played.
As we now journey into follow up events, let me fill you in on the standings in both events.
Firstly, the Wolfgang Leonhardt Cup. Going into round 7, a number of possibilities on the top boards could have brought about a different result but in the end, when the dust settled the top 3 placings were as follows:
1st, 5.5/7: Saminda De Vas
2nd, 5.5/7: Iker Hernandez Mendez
A strong win against Marc Saxon in the last round was enough to secure third place for Derwent Maggs (5.0/7) on countback ahead of Jacob Gibson (also 5.0/7).
Well done to all the players and to the three place getters, well played.
In the John Brooke Cup, after the final round there was a standout winner with 6 out of 7 points. Well done to Thomas Browning.
Only one point behind on 5 out of 7 and clear 2nd was Darren Powell.
Third after countback with a great tournament was Justin Massam on 4.5 out of 7.
Well done to all players and congratulations to the three place getters. Well played.
The Perth Chess Club has won the B and C divisions of this year's Harris-Edwardes Interclub tournament! Southern Suburbs won the A division, with Perth finishing third. Games from all divisions are available for viewing and download (PGN). Full results are on the CAWA website.
Report on the B Division:
Perth B1 finished top of Group 1 with a dominating 9.5/12 points, while Perth B2 took out Group 2 with 7/12 points. This gave us an all-Perth final round, which saw Perth B2 come out on top with a score of 2.5-1.5.
Thanks to all players from both teams who ensured that the B Division trophy would be making it's way back up to Perth Chess Club for the first time in over 10 years!
Report from Dylan Gough:
Last Wednesday saw the conclusion of the 2022 Norbert Muller Cup. Whilst some of the results may not be a good representation of the quality of chess played, this is no reflection on the closeness of the games that were played week in, week out and played in great spirit. All results are now in and are listed below. However in summary these are the final winners for each division.
Division A: A consistent, no loss effort from Derwent Maggs saw him fend off a late challenge from Jay Lakner to finish first and second respectively. Third place was a 3 way tie and testament to the high quality chess being played involving Gyula Plaganyi, Alan Wolstencroft and Rob Maris.
Division B: The standout winner in division B was Dave O'Shaughnessy who didn't lose a game to register an almost perfect total to win the event with a round or 2 to spare. Great chess was played as this closely contested group were well matched and each game was a challenge. 2nd place with a great score of 4.5 was Chirag Doshi securing second place, half a point ahead of club veteran Wolfgang Leonhardt.
Division C: Division C was possibly the closest contested group, with the final placings only decided in the last round. Congratulations to Stephen Hintz for coming out on top, keeping his nerve, playing great chess and securing a half point victory over Franz Oswald and a further half point back to the youngest player Yonal De Vas in third.
Division D: Player of the tournament across all divisions with the mercurial score of 7 wins from 7 games came from this group with Justin Massam achieving this outstanding result.
Such were Justin's results over the course of the tournament that the biggest fight in the final 2 weeks came to be the battle for second which ended as a two way tie between Jean-Michel Maujean and young Senudi De Vas on 5 out of 7.
Congratulations and thank you to all players for your conduct and attitude over the past 7 rounds. You have made my job so much more efficient with your diligence and efforts to make all playable games actionable. It has been a pleasure to see the games and to interact with you each week and I look forward to continuing it bigger and better next year. Well done to the winners over all divisions and I look forward to seeing you all next week as we wind up the year's proceedings with trophy/medallion presentation and a handicap blitz tournament.
Also a big thank you and acknowledgement to both Daniel Clarke for his consistency, accuracy and diligence in ensuring the pgn's of all games are available on the website for viewing each week, and to Rob Maris for his support to me in this new role and being my voice of reason and accountability in recent months. I truly appreciate all the support and feel well received at Perth Chess Club.
Report from Rob Maris:
The Allegro Championship was an 8-round swiss held over two weeks (13 & 20 Jan). This attracted an excellent turn-out of 40 players, that enjoyed plenty of games after the Christmas break.
We ended up with a 3-way tie for equal first on 6.5/8: Yihe Fu (Rebo), Saminda De Vas, Derek Elkington. Just half a point behind them were Derwent Maggs and Jamie Laubbacher.
The Allegro seems to be a popular tournament to start off the new year and helps to assess the appropriate rating group for players new to the club.
Report from Rob Maris:
The Mary Thomson Cup consisted of 40 players that were split into 4 groups: the "A" was a 16 player 7 round swiss, whilst the "B", "C", "D" were all-play-all groups of 8 players.
"A": Derwent Maggs showed why he is rated about 2200 with a convincing performance to secure 1st place on 6.5/7. Derwent was 1.5 points clear of Chirag Doshi and Rob Maris in equal 2nd. Marc Saxon made a welcome return to tournament chess after a break of over 10 years, he achieved 50% despite playing against the top 3 scorers. New member Marcus Ingram-Halford was also impressive scoring 4/7. Highly rated Rebo found playing at two clubs too tiring and withdrew after draws with Kelly Ristovsky and David Barry and a loss to John Barber.
"B": New member Daniel Clarke triumphed in some level looking endgames to win all 7 games. Thomas Browning and Mark Howard shared 2nd place with 4.5.
"C": Ernest Boswarva was on fine form to finish 1st on 5.5, his only loss was to new member Brandon Barry. Brandon was second on 5 after being held to a draw in the last round by improving junior Yonal De Vas. Ernest's only draw was to another new member Matt Carroll who came 3rd with 4.5.
"D": Brian Overste was successful in taking out 1st place, also with 5.5/7. Brian was just half a point ahead of Mike Rennie and Gordon Lucas.
Report from Rob Maris:
The 2021 Perth Chess Club Championship had 38 players competing in a 7 round swiss that was also FIDE rated. With the swiss format this gave players the opportunity to play against those they do not usually meet in the all-play-all tournaments.
In round 6 Marc Saxon achieved a draw with black in a long game against Derwent Maggs. This meant that Derwent went into the final round with black against David Barry who was sharing the lead. Derwent triumphed to finish 1st on 6/7 with Marc and Derek Elkington in equal 2nd place.
Amongst the other impressive performers, with wins and draws against higher rated players, were Marcus Simonds, Iker Hernandez Mendez, John Brooke and Darren Powell.
Report from Alan Wolstencroft:
Great result last Wednesday versus the Metro Chess Club. Our Club won 22 to 14 which puts us in good stead for the away match against Metro on Thursday, 8th July.
After the first round on Wednesday we were losing 5.5 to 6.5. The second round we won 6.5 to 5.5. So going into the last round both teams were on 12. Somehow or other our team dominated the last round which we won 10 to 2, giving us an overall score of 22 to Metro’s 14.
Congratulations a terrific result!!!
Report from Rob Maris:
The first Fred Maris Trophy rated tournament attracted 34 players, a really good turn-out for a Winter tournament. It was pleasing to see Ross List and Norbert Muller making a welcome return to a rated tournament at the club. There were 4 all-play-all groups of 6 players and the "A" group was a 10-player 5-round swiss.
The winner of the Fred Maris Trophy with 5/5 was Yonal de Vas. The top scoring player in each group was: "A" Rob Maris 4.5/5, "B" Daniel Clarke 4.5/5, "C" Yonal de Vas 5/5, "D" Darren Powell 4/5, "E" Geoffrey Owen 4.5/5.
Each of the all-play-all groups was won by the second highest rated player. In the "A" swiss there were many draws, including Robert Stortz drawing every game.
Report from Alan Wolstencroft:
Perth Chess Club retained the Bernard Anton Shield with a convincing win over the Metro Chess Club 21.5 to 14.5, a very similar result to that of the earlier home match in June. The combined 2021 score was 43.5 (Perth Chess Club) to 28.5 (Metro Chess Club).
As usual there was a friendly spirit during the match despite the intensity of some of the games.
Report from Rob Maris:
The Wolfgang Leonhardt Cup & John Brooke Cup attracted a total of 38 players. This consisted of 14 players in the higher rated Wolfgang Leonhardt Cup and 24 players in the John Brooke Cup.
In the Wolfgang Leonhardt Cup, Marc Saxon was impressive winning his first 6 games. Marc was held to a draw in the final round by Peter De Yaak who came 2nd on 4.5/7. Two of the lowest rated players, Daniel Clarke and Marcus Ingram-Halford, performed well above their rating scoring 3.5 and 3 respectively.
In the John Brooke Cup it was a close fascinating battle at the top with the lead changing from Justin Massam to Miles Sowden then to Steven Hintz. Steven finished 1st on 6/7 with Yonal De Vas 2nd on 5.5 and Kuol Garang 3rd on 5/7. Three new members competed: Martin Leech 4/7, Matthew Dudek 4/7, Ridge Kwenda 2/7. Martin and Matthew will also gain a FIDE rating, as will Charles Knight and Ashley Michael.
Report from Rob Maris:
The first Norbert Muller Cup was extremely well supported by members with 39 participating in a friendly and competitive manner. The B, C and D groups consisted of 8-player all-play-all groups, whilst the A group was a 7-round swiss of 15 players.
In the A group Derwent Maggs scored a perfect 7/7, 2.5 points clear of equal 2nd place that was shared between unrated Josh Davoll, Rob Maris and improving junior Iker Hernandez Mendez.
The last round of the B group saw Ernest Boswarva defeat Steven Hintz to finish equal first with him on 5.5/7, a point ahead of 3rd placed Franz Oswald who joined the club from Melbourne.
In the C group top-rated Colin Walker was 1st with 6.5/7 conceding a draw to Ashley Michael. Ashley was the lowest rated player in this group, but is clearly improving as he scored 4.5/7 to finish 3rd with John Brooke. New member Morgan Larkin from USA came 2nd on 5/7.
Manfred Young was highest scorer in the D group with 6/7, his only loss coming in the last round to new member Jake Watson who was 2nd on 5.5/7. Another newish member Ridge Kwenda was equal 3rd with young Senudi De Vas on 4.5/7.
Congratulations to the highest scoring player Derwent Maggs; he is the first player to have his name engraved on the Norbert Muller Cup.
Photos from the trophy presentation for 2021 are now on the Photos page.
Report from Rob Maris:
The first tournament of 2020 was an 8 round Allegro (15mins each) held over two weeks that attracted 36 players. Equal 1st on 6/8 were Juan Rodriguez, Ned Tomic and 90 year old Wolfgang Leonhardt!
2019 was a successful year at the club with the five rated tournaments attracting an average of 33 players.
Report from Rob Maris:
In 2020 the rated groups tournament attracted a record 39 players, who were split into 4 groups with players of similar strength.
The 'A' group consisted of 10 players rated over 1750 (including 3 of WA’s top juniors) and was run as a 7 round swiss. All players scored at least 2/7 and the winner Juan Rodriguez scored 5.5/7 (loss to Chirag Doshi, draw with Jamie Laubbacher). The 'B' was an 8 player all-play-all, but 2 players had to withdraw after 2 games. Kelly Ristovsky was half a point ahead of Jacob Gibson before they played in the last round. Kelly won to finish on 4.5/5 (draw with Justin Massam). The 'C' was a very close 8 player all-play-all. New member Miles Sowden was 1st on 5.5/7 (loss to another new member Ben Knox and draw with Jayden Huynh). Besides Jayden, who withdrew on 0.5/4, all other players scored at least 2.5/7. The 'D' was a 13 player 7 round swiss. This group also consisted of well-matched players and the top score again was 5.5/7 with new member Ben Colman and Bruce Lanham sharing first place.
Report from Rob Maris:
The 6 player divisions tournament consisted of 3 all-play-all divisions of 6 players and 1 swiss division of 10 players. The two juniors dominated the "A" with Rebo 1st on 4.5/5 after drawing a long endgame with Jamie who was 2nd on 3.5/5. In the "B" Alan scored 5/5 and improving Kelly was 2nd on 4/5. The "C" was won by new member Abhay on 5/5 with Mark 2nd on 4/5. The "D" was won by Bruce on 5/5 after a last round victory with black against 2nd placed David Frankland.
The players, including Wolf, seemed to enjoy playing rated games again after the break: the hall was warm enough and the quicker time-control 50mins plus 30secs per move led to most games finishing prior to 10pm.
Report from Alan Wolstencroft:
The first leg of the Bernard Anton Interclub match with Metro Chess Club was held at Metro Chess Club on Thursday, 9th July. It was a close fought match. Going into the last round with Perth leading by one point, strong performances by the Open and Under-1550 divisions secured a three-point victory, 19.5 to 16.5.
Report from Rob Maris:
The second leg was held at Perth Chess Club on 22nd July. Both clubs made just 2 changes to their teams, but the results were not as close as the first leg with Perth winning by 24.5 to 11.5. The total result was a Perth victory with 44 points versus Metro’s 28 points.
Report from Rob Maris:
The Wolfgang Leonhardt Cup (over 1500) & John Brooke Cup (under 1500) had 32 players in these FIDE-rated 7 round swiss tournaments.
In the Wolfgang Leonhardt Cup, Derwent Maggs had a successful return to tournaments with an unbeaten 5.5/7 (including a draw with Wolfgang!), which enabled him to finish joint first with Rebo.
In the John Brooke Cup, congratulations to Mark Howard and David Hounsome who were joint first on 5.5/7.
Please see the Tournament page for the cross-tables for both tournaments, plus you can play through a wild and very entertaining game between Alan and Derek.

Derwent Maggs won the 'A' group on 5/7 with Chirag Doshi 2nd on 4.5 then David Barry and Rob Maris equal 3rd on 4.
In the 'B' group there were many draws in the early rounds that helped enable Miles Sowden to lead on 4.5/5. But Miles was overtaken by John Barber, Steven Hintz and Derek Roebuck who were equal 1st on 5/7.
The 'C' was won by junior Iker Hernandez with 6.5/7, his only draw with Victor Markou. Iker impressed both with his play and taking his time throughout his games. Another new member Zachary Fernandez was 2nd on 5 despite a forfeit and Colin Walker was 3rd on 4.5.
There was a clear top 3 in the 'D' with Geoffrey Owen sharing 1st with junior Yonal De Vas (aged just 10) on 6/7. In 3rd was David Pires on 5 who was defeated in his last round by Mike Rennie.

To enable the SwissPerfect program to pair opponents, 1 round was input as the total of each pair of White and Black games, divided by 2. Any odd half-points would be used at the end of the tournament as tie breakers. Placegetters were: 1st Derwent Maggs, 4/4; 2nd Ben Hurst, 3.5/4 and =3rd Ross List and Juan Rodriguez, 3/4.

There were four teams in rating groups =< 1950, =< 1750, =< 1550 and =< 1350. Alan Wolstencroft was our Team Captain. In the first round Perth managed a gain of one point and looked like there may be a possibility of pulling back the four point lead Metro gained from the first leg in March 2017. However this promising start was not continued with Perth eventually losing 14 to 22 with an overall loss of 30 to 42. Congratulations to Metro who continued their winning streak from last year!

The Perth Chess Club Rapid Play tournament was a 6 round swiss held over two weeks (20 & 27 January). Played at the time control of 20 minutes, plus 10 seconds added per move, there was a great turn-out of 30 players the first week for the rounds 1 to 3. In round 3 the last game to finish was a draw on top board between Robin Shaw and Derwent Maggs. The leaders at the half-way stage on 3/3 were George Carolin-Unkovich and Ned Tomic.
The second half of the Perth Chess Club Rapid Play tournament was held on 27th Jan. In round 4 George defeated Ned to lead on 4/4, but George was defeated by Derwent in round 5 who then led by half a point from five players. In the final round Derwent won against Fred to finish first, whilst Derek defeated Wolf to come second, Peter and George drew the last match to finish and shared equal third. 32 players took part in the second week including a pleasing number of players new to the club. Report from Alan Wolstencroft:
It was a closely fought Bernard Anton Shield match with the Metro last Wednesday. The Metro Chess Club being the eventual winners by one point 18.5 to 17.5. Their win can be attributed to the fact their Open team played very well and for most of the match and they were only one player short (an unusual occurrence for Metro for their away match). Full credit to all our club players in particular those of the Under 1900 and Under 1500 who got very good team scores. The return match is on Thursday, 4th August. We only have to win by 19 to 17 or better to retain the Shield for another year so there is still plenty to play for.

To enable the SwissPerfect program to pair opponents, 1 round was input as the total of each pair of White and Black games, divided by 2. Any odd draws could be used at the end of the tournament as tie breakers.

Perth Chess Club players were successful in the first round of the 2013 Bernard Anton Shield. The results of all divisions are up on the result page. Unless my arithmetic has failed me, the final score for the round was a 24 - 12 win for Perth over Metro, who were handicapped by not fielding players in a couple of teams. Lets hope we can use that advantage to win the overall competition when we meet Metropolitan again later in the year.
While strictly speaking this was not a Perth Chess club event, the results and crosstable are available here.
The return match was held last Thursday at the Metropolitan Club at Drabble House in Nedlands. After some hard fought chess, the score on the evening was 18-18. Metro had a very strong open team but our under 1900, under 1750 and under 1500 teams more than made up for the strength of the Metro open team. A good solid result on the night. From what I saw, there was some good fighting chess played at all levels.
Given that we won the earlier match, that means that Perth Chess Club wins this years Bernard Anton Shield. Well done all.
Congratulations are due to Robert and Alex for their shared first place, and the chasing pack of three who shared third place.

A healthy turnout of 27 players competed in this 7 round swiss with 90 minutes flagfall (7.30pm to 10.30pm) per player per game. The 2010 Perth Club Championship was won by Alex Janceski after his last round defeat over Andrzej Patron.
In round 4 Andrzej became sole leader after his triumph over Wolfgang Leonhardt and he maintained the lead after drawing with Rob Maris. Andrzej also drew with Dennis Holland in round 6, whilst Alex defeated Rob to share the lead half a point clear of Dennis and Fred Maris.
Despite his last round defeat, Andrzej shared in a 4-way tie for 2nd place with Dennis and Fred who drew their match and Ross List who defeated Wolfgang. Alex’s only draws were to 5th place getters Lennard Mechlowski and Mike Nairn. Also in 5th place was Steven Hintz (1417) who drew with Lennard, Ross and Grant Bultman before defeating Rob in round 7.
Norbert Muller kindly organised the tournament and ensured that it ran smoothly. Thanks also to John Brooke for organising the opening and closing of the club each week.

Support for Perth Chess Club steadily increased during 2008 from 16 players in the Club Championship at the start of 2008, up to 24 players in the handicap tournament in November. The further increase to 32 players in the 2009 Perth Club Championship was a most welcome surprise.
The 2009 Club Championship finished in a triple tie for 1st place between Wolfgang Leonhardt, Ross List, and Rob Maris on 5.5/7. Peter Dix was unfortunate not to come 1st since he led with 5/5 after a convincing victory over Rob. However, in round 6 Peter was black against Wolfgang who had only dropped half a point so far (to Martin Curtis). Wolfgang took the lead after gaining victory over Peter in a game he dominated with central pawns and active pieces. In the final round Rob played the Danish Gambit leaving Wolfgang 2 pawns ahead but unable to develop his King side pieces. So Wolfgang castled long but fell victim to a decisive attack involving a rook sacrifice (see game). Peter had a slight advantage against Ross for most of their last round encounter, but after much solid defence Ross won a piece and the game.
Peter shared 4th place with Ned Tomic and Andrew Patron. Ned won his round 7 game against Natalie Maris with some tricky tactics whilst Natalie had been trying find a way to capture Ned’s trapped rook. Andrew won his round 7 game against Martin Curtis who left himself too short of time. Douglas Tunmer and Gabriel Nhial were the highest scorers of the unrated players, whilst Jacques Meyer did very well as he played 7 much higher rated players.
Thankyou to Norbert Muller and Joe Klimczak for an enjoyable well organised tournament.

Former player Bernard Anton was for many years a member of Perth Chess Club and then Metro Chess Club. A wooden chess board has been engraved with ‘Bernard Anton Shield’ and ‘Perth - Metro Challenge’.
The 2009 Perth - Metro Challenge consisted of one series of games played at the Metro club followed by a second series the following week at the Perth club - a total of 54 games. 9 players represented each club on the two nights: there were 3 players from Metro club and 3 players from Perth club in each of the 3 rating divisions. All players had 3 games per night against opposing club players in the same rating division (30mins each player per game). On the second night colours were reversed, so those that played on both nights had white 3 games and black 3 games against players of similar ratings. The first half of this match was held on 13th May at Perth club, the second half was played on 13th August at Metro club.
Despite having plenty of members, Metro struggled to organise strong enough teams to visit Perth. In each division Perth were victorious over Metro by the same score (6.5 - 2.5), so Perth had a massive 19.5 - 7.5 lead. For their home match Metro brought into their ‘A’ team the highly rated Tristan Boyd and Stephanus Kurniwan to join with Gordon Dunlop. Metro’s hopes of recovery were dashed in their first home round as Perth’s ‘B’ and ‘C’ teams were triumphant and their ‘A’ team gained a draw. Although Metro’s ‘A’ team won 6 - 3 at home, their ‘B’ and ‘C’ teams were again beaten. The score at the Metro club was very close indeed: Perth 14, Metro 13, however, the overall score was Perth 33.5, Metro 20.5.
Report courtesy of Senior Clubs Newsletter, September 2009.
This tournament was won by Rob Maris who scored 11.5 points, second was Natalie Maris (10.5 points) and third Martin Curtis 9.5 points.
For each round players had two games (30 mins each player per game) with a set opening against the same opponent - one game with white and the other game with black. The results in the cross table are based on the score over the two games (2 wins or 1 win and 1 draw = 1 point). However, for players on the same score the results of all games were used to determine placings and this method determined that Rob finished first.
Martin Curtis again kindly organised interesting openings for each round.
This tournament was won by Natalie Maris who scored 6 points out of 7, second and third were Wolfgang Leonhardt and Jacques Meyer who scored 5 points each. This was a very well supported tournament and the time handicap resulted in a number of close games with players such as Jacques, John and Victor scoring more than some of the higher rated players. This is shown in the cross-table below with the players in rating order.
The players had 30 minutes for each round plus / minus 1 minute for every 100 rating points difference between the opponents (organised by Norbert and Joe).
Next year this handicap tournament should be even more interesting with players having 30 minutes plus / minus 1 minute for every 50 rating points difference between the opponents.
Nedeljko Tomic convincingly won the 2008 Perth Club Championship with 6.5/7 - 1.5 points clear of 2nd placed Peter Dix and Rob Maris. Ned’s impressive score was achieved against a tough field with 6 players rated over 1700. Of these, Peter was the only one to avoid defeat - Peter was close to beating Ned before he got into time trouble. In the last round Ross List had played well to get a pawn up on Ned, but later on Ross self-destructed giving Ned a piece and consequently the game.
Ned and Natalie showed signs of improvement in their play with each gaining fine victories over both top rated players: Rob and Wolfgang. Martin Curtis also managed to beat Wolfgang, but in the last round Martin lost to unrated Rik Kort. Rik had previously proved his capabilities by achieving draws with Natalie and Ross and reaching a level endgame with Rob.
This 7 round swiss had many interesting and close games, for example Colin Walker drew all three games from rounds 4 to 6.
A big thankyou to John Brooke for opening the club up around 7pm and locking up at the end. Also many thanks to Norbert Muller and Joe Klimczak for running the event in an efficent and pleasant manner. With games beginning promptly at 7.30, the 90 mins flagfall led to the last games being completed by a ‘not too late’ 10.30.

Metro have taken the narrowest of leads (14-13) over Perth in the 2008 Bernard Anton Challenge played at Metro club on 8th May. The three players in each team played the three players in the opposing team (same division) with each player having 30 minutes per game.
In the U2000 division the Metro team (Marc Vlietstra, Leon Taylor, Richard Lilly) and Perth team (Rob Maris, Wolfgang Leonhardt, Ross List) shared the points 4.5 each. In the U1750 division the Metro team (Robert Baumgartner, Ray Johnstone, Wally Lubtschenko) scored 3.5 points and the Perth team (Natalie Maris, Peter Dix, Andrew Patron) scored 5.5 points. In the U1500 division the Metro team (Alex DeHeer, Dougal McLean, Graeme McQuilkin) scored 6.5 points and the Perth team (Rik Kort, Jacques Meyer, David Frankland) scored 2.5 points. 2008 Perth Open was hosted this year by our club, on behalf of the Chess Association of Western Australia. The tournament was played over 7 rounds. Congratulations to joint winners: Stephanus Kurniawan & Marc Vlietstra (5.5) with David Ellis & Thomas Donaldson (5.0) sharing third place.
On his recent visit to WA, Australian Grand Master Darryl Johansen gave a simultaneous exhibition at Perth Chess Club. Darryl offered to play one game blindfold whilst playing 20 games simultaneously. As he went around the room making moves he also made entertaining observations about the games.
Of the 20 simultaneous games Darryl had no losses winning against 18 opponents, but was held to draws in two games: Perth Chess Club President Wolfgang Leonhardt achieved a well deserved draw and visitor Leon Taylor also managed a draw in a blocked endgame. Peter Dix took up the blindfold game and soon had Darryl in trouble, Peter did not allow Darryl to recover and defeated the Grand Master.

Andrzej Patron won the tournament scoring 8 points out of 9. He lost only one game - to Rob Maris. Second was Alex Janceski who scored 7.5 points and third Rob Maris with 6.5 points. Congratulations to the winners!
The 2008 Harris/Edwardes Tournament was held at the Metropolitan Chess Club on the 24th of July. Perth won both B and C divisions, defeating Metro B (2.5-1.5) and Metro C (2.5-1.5). Full results are available from CAWA.
The tournament was played over 7 weeks started on Wednesday 23rd July. Tournament was played in Robin format, in 3 rating groups.
The second match between Metropolitan Chess Club and Perth Chess Club was won by Perth Chess Club.
For each round players had two games (30 mins each player per game) with a set opening against the same opponent - one game with white and the other game with black. The results in the cross table are based on the score over the two games (2 wins or 1 win and 1 draw = 1 point). However, for players on the same score the results of all games were used to determine placings and this method determined that Natalie finished first.
Martin Curtis organised the openings for each round and chose interesting lines where one side sacrificed a pawn in order to gain some form of compensation, such as a lead in development:
Round 1: 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 e6 3. Nf3 c5 4. d5 b5
Round 2: 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Nf6 4. Ng5 d5 5. exd5 b5
Round 3: 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 g6 3. Nc3 Bg7 4. e4 d6 5. f3 O-O 6. Be3 c5 7. dxc5 dxc5 8. Qxd8 Rxd8 9. Bxc5 Nc6
Round 4: 1. c4 Nf6 2. Nc3 e6 3. e4 c5 4. e5 Ng8 5. Nf3 Nc6 6. d4 cxd4 7. Nxd4 Nxe5
Round 5: 1. d4 f5 2. e4 fxe4 3. Nc3 Nf6 4. f3 exf3 5. Nxf3 e6
Round 6: 1. e4 c5 2. d4 cxd4 3. c3 dxc3 4. Nxc3 Nc6 5. Nf3 d6 6. Bc4 a6 7. O-O Nf6
Round 7: 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. d4 exd4 4. c3 dxc3 5. Nxc3 Nf6 6. Bc4 d6
Tournament was won by Natalie Maris who scored 5.5 rounds points and 11 games points. The second was Rob Maris with 5.5 rounds points and 10 games points. Third was Martin Curtis who scored 4.5 rounds points and 9 games points. Congratulations to winners!
The players had 30 minutes for each round plus / minus 1 minute for every 100 rating points difference between the opponents (organised by Norbert and Joe). This was a very well supported tournament and the time handicap resulted in many close games with plenty of players scoring more than some of the higher rated players.
Tournament was won by Natalie Maris who scored 6 points, second was Ross list and third Mike Nairn who scored 5 points each. Fourth & fifth were Andrzej Patron and Nedeljko Tomic who scored also 5 points each. Congratulations to winners, especially to Natalie who won second tournament in the row.
1st Rob Maris, 2nd Wolfgang Leonhardt, 3rd Martin Curtis
U1700 =1st Joe Klimczak & Norbert Muller, 3rd Tony Bannan
The Perth Chess Club (based in North Woodvale) recently defeated the Metro Chess Club (Nedlands) in first Bernard Anton Shield challenge match consisting of 54 games. The clubs were competing for the Bernard Anton Shield - Bernard had been a member of both clubs for many years and so this challenge match was considered a fitting tribute to him.
This challenge match was played over two evenings, firstly at the Metro club then at Perth club. The final scores for Perth players were 34 wins, 5 draws, and 15 losses. The top scorers for Perth with 5 wins out of 6 games were achieved by tournament organiser Norbert Muller and Edwin Nie the only junior.
Hopefully a similar format in future years will bring players from these clubs together for some friendly rivalry and more enjoyable games. Thanks to Norbert Muller and Garry Taylor for organising the teams.
